Need something good to read?

Thanks to Sarah I clicked on David Montgomery's blog this morning and was reminded of why I think he's the cat's pajamas.

Here's his list of crime fiction writers that are yummy reading.
He mentions Ross Thomas...I love Ross Thomas. "The Fools in Town Are On Our Side" is still one of the best titles ever.

Anyway, click here to read the list.

Besides being a great - and still underrated writer, Ross Thomas was an equally good story teller. During the several days it took me to move my library into a new home in Malibu, I was surprised by the degree of interest my 60'ish rather Mid-Western sounding neighbor had in my reading tastes.

We ended up having many talks about writing and literature (and the physical attributes one of the singers of the Go's Go's who shortly after moved in across the street) but he never once mentioned what he did for a living.

It was only months later when I finally saw his libary that I realized the person I had been talking to all this time and who had once quite disparagingly commented on my complete Ross Thomas collection was - Ross Thomas! Which was particularly embarrassing as his photo was on all the dust jackets.

I later moved to the Point and shortly after the '92 fire burned out the old neighborhood, and Ross saved only his then current manuscript as I recall. Everything else was lost, including his prized typewriter.

He then rented near me while his house was slowly rebuilt - with it looking exactly like the 1950's cottage it had been. But I never got to see it or him again, as not long after he moved in, he passed away.

Just as I hit send - I realized I had mis-typed the date of the fire as 1992 instead of 1993.

Brady, great Ross Thomas story!

Miss S has, as usual, impeccable taste. The Fools in Town Are On Our Side is one of my two favorite Thomas books, along with Chinaman's Chance, but all are worth reading.
