Miss Snark is Damn Mad

Barbara Bauer is not a literary agent. Barbara Bauer is a scam artist. And a very very stupid one. Here's the scoop:

Barbara Bauer phoned the woman who runs the web hosting for Absolute Write wherein Barbara Bauer was listed as one of the 20 Worst Agents (a list I was happy to publish as well) and sounded scary enough that the site host panicked and pulled the plug.

In the past Barbara Bauer, one of the 20 Worst Agents, tried to get Teresa Nielsen Hayden fired for "libeling her on the Making Light website".

Like I said: stupid. It's not libel when you're telling the truth.

Let me say this again in no uncertain terms: Barbara Bauer is not a reputable literary agent. She is a scam artist.

Strong words? You bet. Wanna come get me Barb? Come on over. Let's compare sales.

While we're waiting for BB to respond, there are a couple things each and every one of you can do to help Ann and Victoria, the people who are on the front lines of documenting and publishing information about just such scam artists. (They have my utmost respect and admiration, and they should have yours too.)

First, you can read this post by Jim Hines and decide if his strategy is something you want to be part of.

Second you can post this list of the 20 Worst Agents with the link to the SFWA site

* The Abacus Group Literary Agency
* Allred and Allred Literary Agents (refers clients to "book doctor" Victor West of Pacific Literary Services)
* Capital Literary Agency (formerly American Literary Agents of Washington, Inc.)
* Barbara Bauer Literary Agency
* Benedict & Associates (also d/b/a B.A. Literary Agency)
* Sherwood Broome, Inc.
* Desert Rose Literary Agency
* Arthur Fleming Associates
* Finesse Literary Agency (Karen Carr)
* Brock Gannon Literary Agency
* Harris Literary Agency
* The Literary Agency Group, which includes the following:
Children's Literary Agency
Christian Literary Agency
New York Literary Agency
Poets Literary Agency
The Screenplay Agency
Stylus Literary Agency (formerly ST Literary Agency)
Writers Literary & Publishing Services Company (the editing arm of the above-mentioned agencies)
* Martin-McLean Literary Associates
* Mocknick Productions Literary Agency, Inc.
* B.K. Nelson, Inc.
* The Robins Agency (Cris Robins)
* Michele Rooney Literary Agency (also d/b/a Creative Literary Agency and Simply Nonfiction)
* Southeast Literary Agency
* Mark Sullivan Associates
* West Coast Literary Associates (also d/b/a California Literary Services)

And third, you might email everyone on that list, just yanno (tm/pp) to let them know that their "colleague" Barbara Bauer, one of the 20 Worst Agents, has made sure that their name is published far and wide.

Silence Ann and Victoria? Not while I'm here.

I've got your back. And I've been told that I'm scrappy.

Thank you, Miss Snark. I like you.

Thanks, Miss Snark.

Miss Snark,

Thanks to Jim, I've made certain to post a perm-link to the Agent's list on my blog. I may not get the traffic that Absolute Write got, but every little link helps push that list up higher and higher on Google.

And she can take her best shot at me also.

Anonymous said...

Makes you want to start a new blog just so you can link it again... and again...

Anonymous said...

I've had that (qualified noun's) name up on my website for as long as the list has been out. It will stay up despite the insane mails she's sent me. (One demanded the name and addy of you, dear Miss Snark. Yeah, riiight, like I know that.)

I'd like to make a hardcopy for the (qualified noun) and shove it (bleep) her (bleep) followed by (bleep-bleep-bleepity-bleeeeeeeep).

But THAT would be too kind compared to the fallout she's going to get from this merry prank.

Miss Snark said...

If Barbara Bauer wants to talk to me, she's welcome to drop me a line:

Or she's welcome to post a comment.

I hope she starts off telling us all about her sales.

Thank you for posting about this. We AWers are very upset.

Thank you for posting this - good karma comes back too!

Thank you, Miss Snark! Well said and much appreciated by all the perturbed AW members currently without a home.

Well done, Miss Snark! Spread the word!

In a word, Bravo!

Hehe, and can you imagine how angry the other 19 on the list will be? They've sat nice and quietly in their corner hoping not many people would read the list, and now it's EVERYWHERE. With all 20 names. *evil grin*

Anonymous said...

Is this something Oprah should know about??

Julie Doe said...

I've had the "Twenty Worst" list posted on my blog (which, granted, gets very little traffic) for quite a while, and I haven't heard a peep from you-know-who. I feel so left out. *sigh*

Bonnie S. Calhoun said...

I've added the link Jim suggests to the post I'm doing for tomorrow. This woman can not hold the internet hostage!

I like Jenna, she doesn't deserve this kind of treatment!

Corn Dog said...

Aye, aye Capitan (Miss) Snark. I have done #1 and #2. The Worst Agents List is posted on my blog site and the hyperlink is set up. Umm, having a little trouble with #3. Seems those email addresses of the other bad agents aren't readily available. So I have substituted #3. I am renaming my e-vile dachshund Barbara Bauer...at least for a few days anyway.

I keep hearing Flight of the Valkyrie as I imagine the blogosphere lighting up with posts about this.

Mark said...

Not only are they the worst agents, they're less than that because this premise requires they actually BE agents. They aren't.

LauraT said...

Barbara Bauer

Thanks to Jim H. for the format~!

I'll try to keep it @ the top of my reviews blog.

...not that I get much traffic...

Brooke said...

You got it, Snark. I'm in.

Long before I became a devote snarkling, I put Writers Beware and Preditors & Editors on my links for my homepage. I'm an AW addict and this little scandal has really p***ed me off. I blogged about it, I've ranted about it and I'm behind the divine Miss Snark and my forum hero Jenna 110%. I was waiting for this post and I thank you for posting it.

Long live gin pails and Scooby Snacks (a real doggie treat) for KY!!!

Writers United. Fearsome.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, bad stuff about her comes up in the first five links of a google search for her. That makes me laugh! LOL! Going after AW might just cost her more than she expected!

Anonymous said...

Yay Miss Snark!
Gin for you,sirloin for KY.

Anonymous said...

Thank you kindly, ma'am!

Now I know why I haven't been able to get onto AW all day.

Shutting down AW, huh? Stupid move. She never should have messed with AW because Jenna's got a posse bigger than even Jenna knows she's got. When people like Jenna Glatzer and Miss Snark give their valuable time to help writers, writers are verrry grateful. And it's not smart to mess with us. Babs is gonna have to change her name 'cause she's about to get famous.

Anonymous said...

Made the twenty worst agents list a permanent link on a few more blogs.

Thanks for spreading the news, Miss Snark!

Ohh, man, now they're gonna put a hit out on the woman.

I am SO turning this into a Boston Legal script!

I've created a Technorati Tag just for this occasion.
Go to www.technorati.com
go to the tags tab
type BarbaraBauer (like that, no space) in search
You'll see tagged posts and to the left is a place where you can grab the tag HTML for your site.

Thank you on behalf of the AW Blogger's forum users.

Anonymous said...

Hey Dawno,

It's me Spooky. I've been out of the loop lately because of work, but did manage to call the boob who runs the hosting service. He was an idiot. I have to say that his site may find more losses than our beloved Absolute Write!

Sorry for the intrusion Miss Snark. Oh, and I might have another funny story for you next week. Keep up the good works!

Ms Bauer is going to find it's not so much fun when her sh!t hits the Snarkilator. Talk about stuff backfiring....!
She should have known better than to mess with AW.

I am frequently, and gratefully, reminded that the objective of this site is not merely to throw scorn upon the ignorant; it is to inform, to educate, and consequently to protect.

I'm an Admin over at wikihow.com and have decided to use my author page to promote the cause. Thanks Miss Snark for reminding me of who I am. :)

I can't believe this...no wonder I haven't been able to get on AW...I've been a lurker there since November and I need my fix!

I couldn;t find the html on technorati, but Hines's post had it. If you copy this and take out the spaces it should work.

WTG, Miss Snark!!!

I just checked the deals database at Publisher's Marketplace and *shock horror* Barbara Bauer PhD & Scam Artist has NO deals listed. I'm shocked, shocked I tell ya! ;)

Oh my ... I've been Snarkified. I'm honored!

I'm planning to post a few more google-bombing tips on the LJ today, including how to do a stealth google bomb :-)

I'm not sure how long Google takes to index things and update its results, but between Ms. Snark and Making Light, it should be fun to watch.

Anonymous said...

Yup. Once again, you've proved why I'm a snarkling. :D

Anonymous said...

You got guts, girl. Good on ya.
I've sent the list to my best writer friends, and I'm posting it on both the HWA and SFWA sites.

To Miss Snark, Jim Hines, Jenna, Ann and Victoria, the Nielsen Haydens, Uncle Jim, the mods of AW, and everyone working hard to ensure that we still have a safe place to commiserate, get sound advice and information about scammers, and in general gather with our fellow writers:

I raise my glass to you. Thanks for all that you do.

kbax: I'll drink to that.

Glad you're damn mad, Miss Snark. You show 'em! I'd like to know how those twenty worst agents, esp.B.B., can feel they're telling the truth by calling themselves "agents."

Thanks, Miss Snark, for your blog.

Did anyone else click on the "AWOL" link on Barbara Bauer's website?

Did anyone else find see that she has set up a blog of her podcasts?

Did anyone else notice that out of all the choices of templates at Blogger, she chose the exact same one Miss Snark uses?

Does anyone else think this was neither a coincidence nor an accident?

River Falls, I thought the same thing. She wouldn't be the first to imitate the appearance of a trusted site to lend herself an air of undeserved authority.

Corn Dog said...

www.20worstagents.com site is up. I'm not as fast as I used to be. The e-vile dachshund is tried of me calling her Barbara Bauer. I hope Miss Snark posts something tomorrow. G'night all

Elayna said...

River falls: I clicked the AWOL link too. The page loaded and for half a second my brain thought, "Why on earth would she link to Miss Snark?" Then I read the Title.

Elayna said...

I visited your 20worstagents site.

I understand that you must be upset, that you are, since you are calling your dog Barbara.

You must also have spent some time and attention on the page, so I hate to tell you this but I was almost offended at its tackiness.

It seems more like a personal attack on Barbara Bauer than a page put up to convey useful information. If it is your intention to provide a service by posting the list, you may want to add a short description of what it is, and try to make it look professional so that people will take you seriously.

Or perhaps you just meant it as a joke for your friends.
