Having trouble seeing Snark?

Miss Snark has been hearing your complaints the blog has been invisible. She isn't moved to do anything of course, since she sees it just fine. However, this evening, given fresh nitwittery has slaked her thirst for blood and cruelty, she was moved to email Cyberian Snark and ask if anything was ...yanno (tm/pp) ... afoot.

Herewith:

I can see the blog...who else do you need?

oh...all right. Here's the reason:

Blogger's acting up.

Do they get error messages? Or does it look like your blog loaded and there's nothing there? I'll tell you a secret:

For me - Jason Pinter's and Bonnie Calhoun's blogs come up as unformatted simple HTML. That is, all their pictures and background colors and pretty fonts don't load. It looks like a SimpleText document. I use Safari. Bonnie seems to think that's the reason.

Sometimes I ask for your blog and I can't see it. I struggle fruitlessly for a few minutes or a few hours, then I go do something useful, like, yanno, WRITE. You're always back by morning.

If only my muse were so reliable.

In other words, don't get nervous until nobody can see your blog for a week. Gremlins get into the cyberworks. Sheriff's posse will be along to flush 'em out. In the meantime, tell everybody to work on their hook. December's approaching.

I'm using Safari and I can see it just fine. Safari doesn't do well with the interface for creating blog posts on your own blog, however. Firefox is much better for that.

Blogger has problems. It has a LOT of users, and operates as a free service, so naturally it's going to get overwhelmed now and again. But, hey, what are we going to do about it? We're getting our money's worth out of it, after all.

I see you fine, Miss Snark. I wouldn't have known there was an issue without this post.

LOL...and I know who Cyberian Snark is, and she'd better get her butt back to work on that rewrite and stop traipsing around the blogosphere!

Dear Miss Snark:

Now your comments page looks different.

It's all right. I'm coping.

Oh. My. G*d. I switched to Firefox and suddenly your whites are whiter, your brights brighter! Your teeth sparkle, your hair has more bounce and shine and I SWEAR, you're stillettos are two inches taller, your dress size two inches smaller and your cup size two inches larger.

Alert Mr. Clooney.

I'm on Safari, no problems here Miss Snark.

when i read comments then click "back" IE has to close. only on miss snark's blog. actually this is in a new window, why would i need to click back? no idea, but that's what happened.

The blog is visible, but just recently it seemed to update very haphazardly. I went by several weeks without a new entry, until someone suggested refreshing the page. Bingo. An inundation of new posts. Since I hadn't altered any settings in Firefox, I figured the fault must be with Blogger.com.

December Quinn said...

The problem for me isn't visibility--it's that half the time I get a "Windows is experiencing an error and must shut down" message. Then it shuts down.

Also, some of the links aren't working.

It very well could be Blogger acting up, but I'm not having the problem on any other blogs.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been getting an error message when I try to read Miss Snark.

Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
R6025
- pure virtual function call

I'm actually amazed the blog stayed up long enough for me to get to comments to post this. As soon as I click "ok" on the error message, I get kicked straight out of IE. I do not have problems on any other website. Is there a graphic that's trying to run? I'm not all that computer savvy, so I don't know what this error means.

Help!

Betsy

The people having problems are the ones using Internet Explorer as a browser.

if you can download another browser and try using that, then report back.

I use Mozilla Firefox.... as MG pointed out it not only makes the blog look better it does wonders for my height.

I went for a week without seeing a new page whether I hit refresh or not.
So I went to blogger's index of blogs and searched for Miss Snark. There I saw a new entry, and realized that I had missed an entire week's worth of posts. At first I thought the difference was if I used misssnark.com or misssnark.blogspot.com, but that didn't seem to matter.

oh yeah, and my brower is firefox, not IE :/

I can see the page just fine, but like Miss Snark, I've had huge problems with my own blog, as well as a few others that I frequent. It's definitely a Blogger problem, not a Miss Snark problem.

I'm on Safari. Lately, sometimes I get "ERROR". Happened just about an hour and a half ago. This also happened a few days ago.

Now you're fine.
Graphics, good.

I've been having the same problem -- Explorer 'encountering' a problem and needing to close down -- when I click back from comments. I figured it was me. (My husband says I'm cursed when it comes to technology.) Now, comments are showing up in a popup window instead of replacing the blog page. Odd. But somehow comforting to know I'm not the only one with issues.

Shiny Penguin said...

With Firefox I have to clear the cache every so often or new posts won't show up.

Miss Snark -- Your casual, light-hearted comments with respect to snarklings who are essentially flung into the darkest bowels of hell when they can't access the blog demonstrates to me that you simply don't grasp the gravity of our situation.

I offer the following example to help boost your empathy:

Suppose, first thing in the morning, before you've had an opportunity to snort coffee all over your keyboard, you read the following headline: "Clooney Marries the Love of His Life, Paris Hilton."

Yes, those emotions you just experienced mirror the depths of our despair, not to mention our outrage when we can't access the blog.

PS Sorry I had to resort to such a dastardly example. I know that was hitting below the belt. But I wouldn't worry about George; someone that gorgeous would never stoop to marrying a punk-ass like Paris.

xoxo, A Devoted Snarkling

I use Safari, and I'm having no trouble viewing the snark. But I regularly run scripts that clear my Internet log files and caches. MacSweeper shareware is one way.

GutterBall said...

I use IE and haven't had any problems. Then again, a friend just shot me an e-mail this morning saying that MY blog was down. Yikes!

It's just Blogger being finicky. I don't complain much because it's free. When the Evil Empire takes over the internet and starts charging for blog space, I guess I'll just go gently into that good night, rather than pay, pay against the dying of the light.

Heh. Sorry.

Occasionally I experience the same problem as december quinn:
The problem for me isn't visibility--it's that half the time I get a "Windows is experiencing an error and must shut down" message. Then it shuts down.

There must be something in the cybersphere cuz I'm experiencing all kinds of glitches this morning.

The Rejected Writer said...

Miss Snark, you're obviously just too damn popular. So much traffic that some of us don't get to see the updates until days later. Please take measures to become less popular. Try switching to burbon. That might take the edge off your over-the-top coolness quotient and make some people go away.

I figured it out this weekend - IE and Blogger just don't get along. Until they have a sit down and work out their issues, people like me who fear Firefox will just have to cope.

And by the way, what dows George C. keep in those big leather bags on his motorcycle? His lunch? Virgins? Virgins for lunch?

Corn Dog said...

IE sucks. Run like h@ll from it.

To get a fresh page fer sure, depress shift and hit refresh simultaneously.

I use Safari and, yes, there have been long spells where Miss Snark was blank...BLANK...I say, or scream into the night. Also when Miss Snark is posting, which is after hours her time, watch out. You will get pie in the eye if you try to watch the blog then.

I have to say...on Safari the stilettos on the new profile picture look like some sort of thing I need 3D glasses for. <--one poorly constructed sentence. I'm siting myself so the grammar police don't need to.

Chumplet said...

Yup, my Internet Exploder at work has been exploding lately while using your site, usually shortly after I click on the links.

I have no troubles when I'm on my lovely Mac at home with Firefox, except I must refresh on occasion.

Plus, now the comments are opening with a separate window, which is unusual for this blogger site. Makes me no never mind, I'm still getting my fix.

Lorra said...

Kitty - I have had exactly the same experience and have been blaming it on my internet provider. I'll stop cursing them (at least for this problem) immediately.

I write for a newspaper blog, and there was this bleak phase where my computer couldn't pull up part of it.

So I phoned my friend, who happened to be slumming that day, but obviously as you can see from this photo, he's a total computer neanderthal.

So I called The Pressmen. Of course they gave me grief for not calling them first. We sorted the problem down to "Adsense" vendors, whose ads were loading all sorts of junk onto the template of the blog. Some of these ad-ons weren't compatible with my operating system (OSX).

Once they pulled them off the template, I was able to see it once again.

However, Miss Snark doesn't have AdSense... but still, I'm betting it's the OP's operating system.

Betsy (anonymous 2) - I am so relieved someone else is getting that runtime error message! It shuts down on me as well so I can only read Miss Snark at work. Is there ANYTHING I can do to get her back without having to download a new browser?? Please, someone?

On the plus side, it gives me a reason to go into work every day...

Anonymous said...

I have the same problem December Quinn reported when I view the blog on IE - it loads and reads just fine until I've clicked on a few links and back, then I get the 'error, shutting down now' message.

It forces me to wait until I get home and use Netscape. The other blogs and sites I read seem to work in IE.

word verification: eebanl - something both evil and banal?

And Miss S, please do, DO put Kanani's "Neanderthal" photo up on the main page??

Going to go swill something cool and get the mini-fan.

I'm here on Safari. The blog works fine, the posts are all there, but the sidebars (and George) are gone and the background is grey.

Whoa - what's with the comments popping up as a new window? And it's so tiny, I need my glasses unless I REALLY want to squint.

I never knew you could download a new browser. Damn, I'm a techno-blonde as well...

Bonnie Calhoun said...

I've recently been getting the 'must shut down now' error from IE. They're upgrading to a new version of IE, so I don't know if this is a precursor of problems to come.

Between Blogger and IE, I too wish to set my hair on fire!

Blogger is giving me fits at one place with a T1 line, not when I use the DSL line at home.

Just want to point out to Mac users that Microsoft no longer supports IE for mac; they haven't for 3 years now.

This prob. isn't the answer to the problem at hand, but just wanted to throw that out there. Safari is excellent.

Phaidra Johnson said...

Firefox here. Now I'm getting the comments page as a separate popup, but that just started today. For the last month or so, I've had the problem where I had to hit Refresh or I wouldn't see new posts on the main blog. I don't have the same problem with my own blog, though.

Kanani said...

You can make this window bigger, just by pulling on the lower right corner.
You can also make the type bigger by fiddling with your keyboard commands.
On Macs it's "apple+" pushed at the same time.

Voila! Instant bifocals.

My blog disappeared too today----AFTER I was hijacked to a Spanish porn page that somehow had my blogspot address.

Don't ask.

Annnnnyway, once I finally got back to my blog, it was blank. So I republished the entire thing. Then my side index disappeared. I closed out Firefox, came back through blogger's main page and went to my blog page via my dashboard. This exercize in futility sucked an hour out of my morning, an hour I could have been writing.

But I can't complain, can I? After all, it's a free service, so I guess I'm getting what I pay for.

I too get the dreaded 'Runtime Error!' and a firm boot out of IE, but only on this one blog out of the many I visit each day.

This error forced me to finally load Mozilla, which shows the whole blog but won't show the new stuff until I tell it to refresh, and also uses the external pop-up window for comments (which feature I do kinda like).

The more technological complexity is allowed to grow unchecked, the more time each day that ordinary humans are so frustrated they're setting their hair on fire.

I confidently expect the planet to explode by 2015, after which time the resulting asteroid belt will continue to cause frustration for all other travelers through this part of the galaxy for approximately 2(to the tenth) millenia.

Miss Snark, never fear, you are coming through loud and clear (as usual). It's my own blog that has given me fits today. Alas, I'm too chicken to attempt a browser overhaul . . . unless someone is willing to bash me over the head with something big and heavy from the slush pile until I come to my senses.

Kim said...

OK- this is too weird. At least it is to me.

I popped over to Kristin Nelson's blog and checked the comments. They don't come up in a separate window. Neither did a few other blog comment comment spaces (did that make any sense?)

I think the gremlins have gotten to this one - or they haven't quite made it to the others yet.

How bizarre. Is it a full moon?

Word ver- hamnuox - kind of how I feel navigating this comment box. I don't like. I don't like at all.

Sha'el, Princess of Pixies said...

You do need to get back into the inner workings of blogspot. Go to the "comments" tab and under "show comments in a popup window" check "no." That will return the comments section to how it was and improve viewing.

I click on the date instead of the comments count, and all the comments show just fine--and the pop up box goes away . . .

But I've been getting booted off regularly--I'm so glad to discover it wasn't my underarm aluminum application.

December Quinn said...

Now that the comments pop up in a window, I'm not having problems anymore.

BuffySquirrel said...

The runtime error is possibly caused by a corrupted or missing .dll. Reinstall or upgrade IE and see if that helps.

Anonymous said...

AN error message kept locking me up too. No problems on other sites. Had to download Netscape to read the blog. No problems. But something is not working right with IE.

Kate said...

Yep, me too. I keep getting a Fatal Exception for this site. I am so desperate that I have had to download Firefox, where it works just fine.

Unless this is my computer's way of telling me that I will NEVER get my edits finished if I keep reading people's blogs...
