Editors in their slush pile

I always love hearing editors talk about what they do so I leaped on this youtube video of Alison at Bleak House.

Watch for the shot when she's looking at the mail. Take a good long look. That's the mail for a week. Notice how much of it there is? That's the reason you don't do anything stupid in your query.

I can tell she's smart and that she is very good at her job.

Thanks for sharing this. She seems so nice and approachable. A lot of people in the publishing world, actually, seem to be unusually thoughtful and considerate and friendly. So I always get annoyed when rejected writers go on rants about the "clueless jerks" and "idiots" who couldn't appreciate their masterpieces.

Poor girl, though--she's going to be getting a lot more mail to sort through now.

Ugh, I can never go to YouTube without losing at least half an hour to watching cool looking videos. Thanks Miss snark (but yes, red pens are the best thing about editing LOL.)

I had the good fortune to meet Alison at the UWMadison Writers Conference a couple of years ago. What a gem! She is approachable, professional, and really loves the books and authors Bleak House represents.

It's important to understand what she said about querying them with the right type of project. They have a distinct list.

Gosh... she looks about my age :D This makes me feel better about my chances to be an editor ;)

Also, I loved English class too.

A friend (Word Vixen) sent me to your site and this clip, and I'm glad she did. I enjoyed watching this piece. I've always wondered what the slush pile looks like!
